All Time Greatest Team
Now that the season is underway, we thought we’d help bring it in by throwing out some of our picks for the greatest “all-time” team made up of our favorite players. So check ‘em out and send us your comments and/or critiques.
Ron's Team
Catcher - Josh Gibson
First Base - Lou Gehrig
Second Base - Jackie Robinson
Third Base - Brooks Robinson
Short - Cal Ripken, Jr.
Left Field - Ted Williams
Center Field - Willie Mays
Right Field - Hank Aaron
PITCHERS
Righty - Nolan Ryan
Lefty - Sandy Koufax
Reliever - Dennis Eckersley
Travis' Team
Catcher – Johnny Bench - When you look up catcher in the dictionary his picture is there.
First Base - Lou Gehrig - If he had not become so ill, the streak would probably have become untouchable
Second Base - Bill Mazeroski - lifetime .983 fielding percentage and was an all-star 10 of his 16 years in the show
Third Base – Alex Rodriguez - I had a hard time with this on it was close between Brooks and A-Rod but in the end A-Rod has 200 more homeruns and a .974 fielding percentage and is still playing he will be in the 500 HR club with several years left to play.
Short – Ozzie Smith - Umm not only was he really good, he looked good doing it.
Left Field – Barry Bonds - The hardest for me to pick because I don’t like the guy, I am convinced though that had he stayed away from HGH or whatever he is taking he would be a first ballot Hall of Famer but probably would not have the HR record.
Center Field – Joltin’ Joe Dimaggio - .325 lifetime at the plate with a 56 game hitting streak to go with it. Also had a 61 game hitting streak in the minors. The guy could hit.
Right Field – Roberto Clemente - Over 3000 hits and a howitzer hanging from his right shoulder.
Pitchers
Lefty - Randy “The Big Unit” Johnson - I know Warren had an award named for him, but "The Unit" has won 4 out of the 7 they have presented
Righty – Cy Young - Has the award for best pitcher named for him what does that tell you.
Reliever – Dennis Eckersley - I don’t even need to put his name down and you know who it is.
Joe's Team
Catcher - Johnny Bench-Changed the position forever.
First Base - Lou Gehrig-the easiest to pick by position for me.
Second Base - Joe Morgan-my position so I'll go a little long. Bill Mazeroski was the best gloveman, Rogers Hornsby was the greatest hitter (any position), but Morgan hit for average and power along with 5 Gold Gloves. Best all around.
Third Base - Brooks Robinson-Gold Glove 1960-1975. Not 1960 and 1975. 1960 THROUGH 1975.
Short - Ozzie Smith-The Wizard.
Right Field - Roberto Clemente-You can argue with me, but you'll never change my mind.
Center Field -Willie Mays-Could've been Mantle if his knees held up.
Left Field -Stan Musial-My dad's all time favorite player.
Pitchers
Righty - Christy Mathewson-at least 22 wins, 1903-14(3 30+seasons)
Lefty -Warren Spahn-No other lefty comes close.
Reliever- Dennis Eckersly
DH - Satan (he invented the position)
Pinch Hitter - Rogers Hornsby-.424 (maybe I pinch hit Rose if I think he has a few bucks on the game.)
Don's Team
Catcher – Johnny Bench – in his own words, “I can throw out any man alive.”
First Base – Lou Gehrig (making it unanimous from our prestigious group which I’m sure would make Lou consider himself “the luckiest man on the face of the earth.”)
Second Base – Jackie Robinson - broke the barrier . . .nuff said.
Third Base – Brooks Robinson – Sparky Anderson said it best, "I'm beginning to see Brooks in my sleep. If I dropped a paper plate, he'd pick it up on one hop and throw me out at first."
Short – Honus Wagner – 21 year career – hit .327, fielding avg. of .947, for me, no contest
Left Field – Ted Williams – the best “pure hitter” the game has ever seen.
Center Field – Mickey Mantle – bad knees and all, one of the best players ever
Right Field – Hank Aaron – Let’s face it 755 is the benchmark of benchmarks in the game
PITCHERS
Righty – Walter Johnson – One of the greatest pitchers of all time whose only shortcoming was playing for the Washington Senators . . .DAMN YANKEES!
Lefty – Warren Spahn
Reliever – Dennis Eckersley
