Final Score: Boise State 43 - Oklahoma 42 (OT)

Monday, January 1st - 8:00 PM Eastern - FOX

recap by Don Prather

Wild and woolly was how this one ended.  Early on it looked like Boise State was just going to blow Oklahoma out of the water when they went up 14-0 early in the first quarter.  Paul Thompson, who has been a solid leader of the Sooner offense this year, made some bad decisions throwing three interceptions.  The third was returned for a TD to put the Broncos up 28-10 with 8:05 left in the third quarter.  Oklahoma slowly clawed their way back into this one and with no timeouts, 2:27 left in the game, and needing a touchdown along with a two point conversion just to tie the game and possibly force overtime, Oklahoma engage in what can only be termed as a "barn burner."

Thompson, settled into a rhythm on the final drive that took 6 plays, went 77 yards and only elapsed 1:14 off the clock capped by a TD pass from the 5 yard line to Quentin Chaney.  Now the Sooners needed a 2 point conversion to tie the game.  Thompson attempted a pass into the endzone that was imcomplete, but a pass interference call gave OU another chance.  Then on the second try, Thompson completes a pass to freshmen tight-end Jermaine Gresham, only to have it called back for in illegal shift on OU.  Then on the third attempt, this time from the seven yard line, Thompson completes a pass over the middle in the endzone to Iglesias for the tie game.

It looked like the game was headed for overtime, but wait there was still 1:14 left on the clock when Boise State took over after the kick-off.  And it only took one play for a score to happen, only not in the way Jared Zabransky, the Broncos QB, would have liked.  He threw out into the flat to his left only his receiver had missed the pass route.  Fortunately for OU, Marcus Walker was there to snag the pass out of the air and return it for a touchdown.  Now OU is up 35-28 with 0:56 to go.

Zabransky comes out and marches the Boise State offense down the field in six plays with a finishing stab of a perfectly executed hook and ladder pass play to the left as Drisan James came down with the ball at the 35 and lateralled to Jerard Rabb who took it into the endzone for the tying score.

Oklahoma wasted no time in the top of the first OT when Adrian Peterson ran 25 yards for the score on the first play.  Boise now had to have a TD to tie or lose the game.  They got down to the 6 yard line on a 4th and 2.  Zabransky left the shotgun formation to split wide left and Vinny Perretta took the snap, rolled to his right and completed the pass in the endzone to Derek Schouman for the score.

Instead of a simple PAT to tie the game and force a second overtime, Boise State elected to go for two.  With three receivers split wide right, Zabransky took the snap from the shotgun and faked a pass out to his right and handed the ball to Ian Johnson who ran back to the left and in for 2 points and the win.

So three big "trick" plays finish off the game for Boise State and what mad them so effective was they had pretty much played the Sooners straight up all night.  They waited for the perfect moment to pull the rabbit out of the hat and it worked to perfection for them.

Boise State finishes the season at 13-0 and, in this writer's opinion, should have at least a share of the national championship.  Last night's game was just another example of why there should be a playoff in division 1A football.  Boise State proved last night that they are a good team and can play with the big boys.  Why not give them a shot at Ohio State or Florida?
