Insight Bowl
Final Score: Texas Tech 44 - Minnesota 41 (OT)
recap by Don Prather
It's mid-third quarter and your team is down by 31 points in a mid-level bowl game, so what do you do? Put things on cruise control, get some of those seniors the opportunity to play in a bowl game and get ready for the off season? Not Mike Leach. Down 38-7 midway through the third quarter and the Red Raiders reeled off 31 unanswered points capped by a career long 52 yard field goal by Alex Trlica as time expired to tie the game at 38 and force overtime.
Then in overtime, the Tech defense held, forcing a field goal kick by the Gophers to make the score 41-38. From there, Graham Harrell lead the Raiders on a short drive and a 3 yard dive into paydirt for the winning score by Shannon Woods to make the final 44-41.
Mike Leach was a bit emotional on the field in the post game interview, "We just kep sluggin' away, uh, kept sluggin' away in the second half. . . Those guys just put in a hell of an effort." This marks the greatest comeback in college bowl game history beating out the 2001 GMAC Bowl when Marshall came back from a 30 point deficit to win 64-61 in double overtime against East Carolina.
Harrell was 36 of 55 for 445 passing yards with 2 TD's and 1 Interception. He also scored on a 1 yard QB sneak while Shannon Woods rushed for 108 yards and 3 TD's on 18 carries. Filani lead the Tech receivers with 11 catches for 162 yards and a TD in his final game for the Raiders.
