Week 1 - DONE! First weigh in since starting - lost 2 1/2 pounds! So we're off and running . . .or at least walking at a brisk pace.
I was asked earlier this week why I was doing this. Why the web page and publishing everything about my eating and workout habits? I think there are two main reasons. First, I think it makes me a bit more accountable. If I'm publishing every day my food intake, I'm more likely to think more about what I'm eating. Second: I think I'm trying to send a message to others out there struggling with their weight the way I have since high school. I don't know about you, but every time I see a story on television about someone who lost a lot of weight, it's always AFTER they've dropped the pounds. There might be a before and after picture, but in my mind the change is so dramatic, it's hard to believe. You don't get to see the process and the struggles they go through which makes it hard to relate to them sometimes.
This morning for instance, I had trouble getting up. I was up a little late watching the game last night (ACH! Browns still haven't found any offense - though that goal line stand was great!), so I was late getting to the gym and due to time constraints could only spend 30 minutes on the treadmill. It wasn't exactly the best workout and my heartrate was a bit higher than it's been in workouts earlier this week. Might be something to do with the exhaustion level and trying to fight through that. If there's a medical expert or fitness expert out there who can answer that, please do! But I digress. I just want to show that losing weight and being healthier isn't a matter of some special diet. I won't be going for any "Nothin' but bacon" or the "all-carbs all the time" options. Based on everything I've seen, read and tried in my life the only way to get the weight off and keep it off is a matter of changing my lifestyle. Paying more attention to what I eat. Not doing it out of habit. "Oh, I'm watching a football game today. We better go get some wings!" You have to get off the coach and get active. And if you've review my workouts for the week, you'll see it hasn't been exactly insane. The longest time I've spent on the treadmill so far is 45 minutes last Sunday. It's about a little at a time. Right now I've lost 2 1/2 pounds which isn't much and I'm not kidding myself, I've got a long way to go. But you have to keep going. Keep chopping away.
I'm sure there will be weeks when I don't lose much if any weight, but I'm going to do my best to stay motivated and keep after it. And when those tough times come, I'll post about it and complain and mope and I want you to call me on it. Having plateaus in weight loss are not uncommon, but they are NEVER an excuse for giving up and ordering a slab of ribs and three pizzas! You have to commit to it and you can't give up.

Went out with friends for a birthday party and bowling - lot a fun. I haven't been bowling in a couple of years. Thank you Mike & Susan Blasko for letting us celebrate with you.
